The world might be under pressure, yet there is hope. A new award originating at the science, music and arts festival Starmus will encourage people to make a difference.

The medal will be given in honour of the renowned scientist and conservationist who passed away this year. It will recognise individuals and groups that champion the natural world.

The Medal's Framework

Initial honorees are expected to be announced during the upcoming Starmus event in Tenerife and La Palma, scheduled from 17–22 October next year.

According to statements that Goodall, a former member of the festival's board, had supported the award’s creation. “The idea of having this award, and Starmus being entrusted to oversee it, is Jane’s,” a statement said. “She said that she wanted this to happen. And I think because of the unique bond she had with the festival.”

“This medal aims to highlight enduring projects undertaken to build an environment improved for all living beings and ecosystems and provide encouragement for the continuation that work,” said a family member.

Format and Inspiration

A co-founder of the festival stated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – would probably have multiple categories.

“It will be inspired by the Stephen Hawking award for science communication established a decade past,” it was explained. Goodall was a recipient of that award.

Expressing concern about the future of the planet, a prominent voice stated, “Honestly, it's challenging to maintain optimism. Present governance in one major nation is conducting a war on science. This situation significantly hampers collective action.”

“In truth, the prospects aren't particularly bright which means we need to commence thinking again, much more seriously about the consequences of human activity. And that’s not only climate change, but also the whole way in which we interact with nature.”

A Call to Action

As a result, observers believe it was a good time to emulate her guiding principles. “It is believed that when we’re awarding the prize, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – which made her foremost concern, to transform our relationship with wildlife around us.”

Another key issue currently involves the spread of false information. The theme of the upcoming festival will be “the search for truth”.

“There is a recognition that truth has become contested where political interests is involved. And it’s a very dangerous thing,” it was said. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; it is impossible to have any influence by political agendas in this field.”

Hope and Determination

The goal is that the medal can motivate concrete steps. “The purpose is inspiring individuals to get involved and to care and to strive toward these goals, truly. Regardless of if we’re optimistic, we have to look at doing all that is possible,” it was added. “Be prepared for failure, but you still have to work towards succeeding.”

A descendant engaged in environmental protection shared hope that “with guidance and once enabled, humans can be conscientious guardians of our planet”, pointing to the initiatives of a foundation which, in addition to its projects, helps the next generation get involved with their community, animals, and environment.

“As my late grandmother often told everyone, the choices we make each day are significant and the responsibility lies with us what type of impact we choose to create,” it was stated. “It is not too late and the Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will offer support and raise awareness regarding constructive efforts that are being undertaken.”
